What would help this is to reduce the margin between charges for electricity & buy back rates. Firms buying from the grid at 20c per kwh but solar buy back rates as low as 8c per kwh.
This hugely affects payback period.
I sell more than I take from the grid but still out of pocket.

Octopus Energy (NZ) currently still gives you at least 17c/kwh though (more @ peak if you opt for the peak export tariff).
I like it, but come expiry time I'll be looking around to see what else there is. Ideally I'd prefer a co-op rather than a part-privatised SOE.
