What distinguishes CDR — and justifies the significant investment it requires — is the unique role it could play in a net-zero future. But project-level carbon accounting doesn’t necessarily tell us whether a project is likely to contribute to that future. (2/5)

No simple definition of CDR solves this problem. Liberal definitions risk justifying support for projects that don’t warrant it. But conservative definitions could discourage funding for projects that are key to developing the CDR capacity we’ll likely need long term. (3/5)
