I don’t think so, I’ve seen them used of foot as well. I’m pretty sure they’re asymmetrical because it allows you to use a bow substantially longer than you are tall without the bottom limb touching the ground.
I think they’re some of the longest bows in the world.
Yumi! The bowyer who owns the bamboo farm where our Chinese Archery Program is held every year, Jaap Koppedrayer, makes traditional yumi as well as horn and sinew steppe bows. One of the treats for students is when he takes us out to his workshop to see them made. https://youtu.be/TJDIifxBXuc?si=N6l2jFc5-fHpDApW
Always pursue your dream.
Demonstrates great skill for a beginner.
Riding horses and being great at archery are things that I was good at.
Never thought of putting them together until now.
Yes! A Japanese friend of mine who is also a horseback historical recreation enthusiast gave a crack at this. The hardest part for me was staying upright on horseback because [6’6”]. The bow wasn’t as awkward as I feared, but I still can’t fire 3 in a row. Was this near Kamakura? Beautiful there.🙂
I imagine a centre-grip bow of that size would be very ill-suited to being fired from horseback, but does it feel significantly different or not, firing an asymmetrical bow? 🏹

Ok, I'm a bit jealous too. 😊
However I think these Japanese asymmetrical long bows are so amazing that I can’t believe we don’t see them in more media from over here.

Omedetou Gozaimasu!
Amazing sight, Erika.
I am very happy you had the chance to get the feel of all the possibilities in Japan.

Sometimes, in differant pieces at differant times, a dream can weave itself together.
You are handy with the bow. Hold a good seat on the horse, Erika.
A basic start.
As Cher says, "This isn't dress rehearsal."
👏👏👏👏👏
I had no idea that was also the name of a type of bow! Very cool!
