This is just rampant. I know a good number of people whose jobs depend on public contracts that are coming to an end, but with no renewal decision in sight - yes or no.

There’s that uncertainty too! The later the announcements gets in the year, the worse that problem gets. I’m so sick of the ARC being this bad. If they cannot do it then they need more staff. They’ll never ask for an increased budget because in the public service that’s “failure” 😔

Recently ARC have been tweeting a heads-up 1–2 days before outcomes announcements.

They said in Senate Estimates they’d continue that (calling it a “system”🤔).

It’s 5pm on Thursday (AEDT) so Monday may be the earliest we get them. Hopefully tomorrow, heads-up tweet be damned!

I was really hoping for outcomes today. We heard from an executive who was delivering bad news that there was "good news coming" and mentioned that it was "under embargo". Beyond frustrating!

Correct. Maybe, once again, they are misspeaking and actually mean the outcomes have been approved by the Minister but they’re internally preparing to release them. Anyway, I don’t think we can read anything from that, unfortunately.

NHMRC isn’t much better at the moment. Outcomes for ideas grants are way overdue. It seems that is indicative of the general state of government agencies at the moment.

It also shows a general tendency of over controlling. Grant schemes move from few larger to many many smaller ones trying to control what is funded instead of leaving it to the experts.
Spending resources to the micromanaging of stuff they should not manage in the first place, wasting time.

All of that is true. They’re also dealing with a substantial increase of projects being managed as so many Covid-overlapping projects had extensions.

Yes agree. Different but related point, I am a fan of smaller grants (not schemes). Among other things, this is because some research suggests that a research grant system geared towards awarding few big project/centre grants may end up being more administratively intense for unis & academics.

As frustrating as it is that unnecessary work is being done by so many people, there is a bigger issue. A lot of people will be put out of work by these decisions (Postdocs, RAs). Each day of delay is a day less these people have to make other plans for next year.

The reason I’m not shouting as loudly about that is because the ARC advertised this 20–29 Nov outcomes window ages ago. But it’s still a problem: contracts were signed before that &, anyway, often finish at the end of the year for various (good) reasons.
