I don’t understand how a B becomes D in normalisation. Feedback is hard to interpret. No textual feedback - it’s impossible to understand what the assessors want. My FoR code has had only 10 projects funded in *25* years despite being a multi $bn industry, but I get dinged on impact!

The lack of written feedback is part of the price we've paid for the streamlining & 2-stage process.

Normalisation is to ensure score distribution is A=top 10%, B=next 15% etc. If an assessor initially gave 40% As, there's lot of movement in the normalisation process.

I had an EOI which was the top score by the Carriage 1/something and the lowest by one of the other reviewers. Double AAs (un-normalised) to EEs (un-normalised). A bit bonkers! It was not shortlisted sadly.

🔹27.7% success rate – 1127 shortlisted of 4063 EOIs
🔹43 EOIs with "disparate scores" were rescued
🔹All EOIs reviewed by 3 College of Experts assessors

No information about success rate per panel, is there? The HCA number of submissions appear very small compared to other panels, e.g. Engineering.

Not yet that I can see. There is info from the DPEI25 though, where HCA got a much higher % of applications through into the shortlist than other panels.

The ARC aims for very similar percentages for all panels. Exceptions are because the panel Chairs get in a room and discuss & compare the margin-calls for all panels. Also, if a panel gets fewer apps than usual, they may boost percentage so not too few grants from that panel are funded.

There's a fixed distribution of normalised grades: A=top 10%, B=next 15% etc.

So if an assessor has 100 grants they have to score 10 As, 15 Bs etc. Is that correct?

That’s the aim, but they don’t end up managing to do it so the normalization is supposed to force that to be true. This is so that their scores for an app can be averaged together with the scores for the same app by other assessors. A statistician will take issue with this, but it’s what’s done.
