We have electric trams and steam trains on the IoM 🇮🇲 and its amazing how often they come in handy in emergencies. Deliveries, snow storms... an electric tram helped mountain rescue get my pal down when he badly fell and broke his leg. Had paying passengers as well!!!

In Sweden, they borrowed locomotives (electric from the 1950s) from museums to increase availability during winter because the more modern trains weren't as reliable in the snow. Something to do with connecting rods. Like to say recently, but probably 15 years ago.

Here in Germany there's a private train company that sometimes does replacement services for Deutsche Bahn. Their coaches remind me of the RENFE carriages I rode in as a toddler in the 80s, and their locomotives are 1950s electric locos that look like museum pieces. https://train-rental.com/galerie/

My granddad always found it funny that early on after our railways went with diesel, the steam locos would often be the ones to come and tow breakdowns.

And of course, continuing the tradition, it’s now those 1960’s diesels that come rescue the newest generation of rolling stock on occasion.
