These aren’t recommendations for political action, though. Her suggestions are financial support for local journalism and for journalists, and staying informed. All good, but she offers no actions for people to do—eg, volunteer at a safe house, run for office, lobby reps, show up at town halls…

This seems like a persistent problem with the American left, writ large. Everyday people are eager to connect with each other and do something, and yet are constantly asked to give more money and cross their fingers. We've got to build in person coalitions and make people feel part of something.

I'm not saying there are no organizations like this. I'm talking about a broader failure among left leaders to engage and connect people who want to be involved. Like this article should mention indivisible and instead tells people who want to do something to instead subscribe to a paper.

It’s only one person’s ideas and reflects this one person’s particular interests and realm of knowledge. Other influencers offer other advice, like run for something, join your local Democratic Party, join indivisible, contact your legislators, etc. Supporting local and liberal journalism is good 2.

These all would be excellent ideas for a column titled "action steps," but they aren't there. Consistently instead of telling people how to get involved, they tell people who to give money to. Money is important, but the right understands that community and connection are vital to politics.

It doesn't have to be as gaudy and 'old school tent revival' as what the other side does, but it needs to be SOMETHING.

Potluck supper before anime night, or the local party swings tickets to a local sports game.. meet-and-greets, community building.

Where I live the local paper is not worth supporting. Very expensive and almost no local news delivered days late. No news radio worth supporting either. When your local news makes itself terrible, what can you do?

Keep digging.

Around here we've got Minnpost, the Minnesota Reformer, the Sahan Journal.. laid-off reporters from the dying local papers who got together and kept working.

There's a group.. States Newsroom, that sets up or helps set up these local news sites.
