actually i would also like to point out one of my favorite details from one of the akkacel covers, because i just love them so much: the disciple trio's clothing.

he wears the same uniform as the other disciples, but he wears a silver-studded belt, a hair ornament, and embossed silver vambraces which contrast against the simplicity of mo ran's.
mo ran is poor. xue meng, while being his equal, as a disciple, is rich.
even if they're on equal footing in their discipleship, xue meng's wealth still shines through. his social status cannot be ignored, and has an impact on who he is.
god. and shi mei. i feel like i could overanalyze the shit out of shi mei, i feel like i could analyze his styling and expression and where he is in the composition a hundred different ways but i'll just keep it simple
shi mei's sleeves are styled the most like chu wanning's out of the three of them. he is also completely unadorned -- you can't really see his hair ribbon, or his belt, and he wears no vambraces.
at this point in the story, you know next to nothing about shi mei.
you don't know his backstory, you don't know any of his inner narrative, and that's on purpose -- both on meatbun's part, and on shi mei's part.
shi mei's "lack" of styling is styling in and of itself. he's presenting himself quietly, he's giving nothing away. he's just a good disciple. that's all.

mo ran's vambraces are simple and leather, his hair is tied up with a (STORY RELEVANT!!!!) ribbon, whereas xue meng is subtly decked out.
