I believe that one of the concerns is that china can suppress negative stories about itself while amplifying stories that cause tension in the US. Not sure privacy law would solve that.

Seriously. I think the reason the classified TikTok briefing spooked Congress so much is that for many of them, it was the first time anyone really explained the unvarnished reality of adtech, outside the Silicon Valley perspective

when I read "lawmakers" I think "republicans" and when I read "social media harms" I think they mean "telling people about the terrible things they do"-- but hopefully its stopping these companies from getting children hooked on screens.
