my version: 5 conference champs (RIP Pac-12) + 3 wild cards get in, use big bowl games as playoff/championship games on rotating basis, seed tournament based first on traditional bowl game matchups and then secondarily on record/ranking.

Looking again, this is not a mistake because we truly have the 4 best teams remaining. Ohio st and notre dame would have been left out but they clearly are 2 of the best 4 teams. Like the wild card round in nfl, the 1st round acts as a weed out round.

What they should have done was keep it at 4 teams but pick them AFTER the bowl games. Ny6 would be the "prove you belong" games.

One year isn't a large sample size though. There have been years with terrible games with just 4 playoff teams and under the old BCS system. Let's see where this is after 5 years to see the true long term results.

I disagree. In the MLB, a mediocre team can get hot in late September and run the table. In CFB, a true number one should have to beat the Boise State, UCF, TCU that has a strong season against lesser competition. The worst case scenario is a couple of mostly uncompetitive playoff games.

In general I’m in favor of incremental increases. 4 to 8 would have been appropriate for a few years, then to 12 if necessary.

All of these games have stunk. Seeding was wrong and the competition has been blech.

12 is good imo but the auto-bye screwed up the seeding. Should have had some of these weaker teams matched up in the first round for better games.

It’s going to take some time to allow for all the dynamics and changes to college football. Still lots of uncertainty and a lack of structure and governance. Probably more chaos to come. Inserting a new expanded playoff just adds to the uncertainty.

I've seen a lot of people supporting giving the conference champions at least a home game but not the top 4 seeds and an automatic bye. I do think that would be a move in the right direction.
