The argument “young white men turn to hate because they don’t get enough empathy for the barriers they face” needs to square itself with the reality that men and women of color — and many white women — faced generations of barriers without turning to hatred in the same numbers. 1/

Barriers like competing for jobs, following rules, paying attention to the task at hand, showing up for work on time, etc. You know - the hard stuff no one else in the country is called upon to do.

When I was a lass, in the olden days, a guy who didn't make an effort to overcome barriers, but rather retreated and whined about it, was considered not much of a "man."

They do exist - mostly things like the loss of high-paying industrial jobs, high rents, college debt. You know, the same increasingly high barriers EVERYONE has since Reagan, just without the extra razor-wire fences and spiked pit-traps of race and gender.

To be fair, I was pretty close to hating the two white men my husband and I had to golf with yesterday. They hit extra balls, took swings before every hit, searched lost for balls in the rough, took bathroom breaks and then tried to pin slow play on the one woman (who never did any of those things!)

I think we have to face up to the fact that driving bigots underground is good for society. There was a minute there where I thought that having them expose themselves would be good - we could all avoid them. But we tried it and it's bad. Let's go back to bullying bigots to keep their mouths shut.
