excellent material! I've done some studying of them for my project. Something notable is how the textures seem to have photo or handpainted base layers, but then manual pixel art details are added on top. Those single-pixel width details really add to the precision of this unique style!

I always asumed thats how most if not all of the texture work for that hardware: they basically did it digitally or scanned traditional texture work, then downscaled it and did cleanup when needed. given the nature of CRT displays (both for work and for consumer display) ->

There was no reason to add too much detail if they'd get obscured during gameplay - unless said models would then get used for cinematic shots with closeups and such.

totally agree, pretty much all games had that workflow. I think the difference I see with VS is that the pixelled-over details are more forward and on lots of textures compared to the average PS1 game. And maybe it wasn't very visible on the original hardware, but it sure looks nice now!

Very important thing to note as well is the vertex lighting on the backgrounds. All the background textures are 16 colours (maybe there are some exceptions, but the majority are 16 cols) All the depth comes from the vertex lights.
