The impacts of funding precarity in the sciences and in particular public health & environment - across the governmental and university nexus - is understood by almost no one at all in the lay context of general media consumers. Science communicators must find ways to signal the harm being done.

For my State - one caught in political and fiscal crosshairs at a Federal level both - if our funding on these programs were to disappear it would mean an end to life-saving community distributed naloxone which has saved over 11,000 lives in just 5 years - an undercount.

In a market of ideas wholly subsumed by Capital - Academics vie for impact scores and cutthroat positions, or sparse jobs, and institutionally - well - you see where major Universities stand on manufacturing consent for fascist regimes to begin purges. We as an Academy are leaning in to fascism.
