i dont get to draw/ sketch/ sculpt much these days but I'm reworking a piece i did years ago... and wondering how i came up with the original concept :)
I make notes for myself for this reason 😂 (I know it's prob not what you meant but for me it's almost always software related: how tf to do xyz in whatever program / where they put some stupid button / etc)
Same! After 2016 I kept forgetting how I did things or what I used. So after I piece I really liked I started using a layer where I made brush notes, sizes I used, color palette, sketches, brush names, where I used it and when.
Absolutely. There are time where I'll sit down to draw, and forgot the shape. Or others where I did these amazingly cool colours, and now I'm like ...crayon box. What??
Absolutely. I made a storyboard series for my channel, and when I put all the episodes together, it was an hour thirty-four minute movie😳 I'd love to try doing it again though lol!
Oh gosh, yeah. I’ve completely solved a coding bug, after hours of effort, then I’ll come across the same issue months later without remembering. I see the links I’m searching have been visited before and I’m like, what, have I done this before… 😂
Yes, in my case it's how to deal with the anxiety over going into the city or shopping centre, when 10 years ago I happily travelled to the other side of the world repeatedly without a second thought.
All the time, when I make something I really like how it came out I wake up the next morning, look at it, and then ask "who drew you? It sure wasn't me, because I dont remember a single step I did"
The first week I had Procreate and an iPad I just messed around for hours and hours a day to get the hang of things. There are a lot of really cool abstract backgrounds I made that week that I’ve been using for years since and have been completely unable to recreate. 🤣🤷🏼♀️
Constantly. I know I have genuine aptitude because I sometimes look at things from 10 years ago that I couldn't replicate consistently NOW, so it's not that I'm not skilled or not learning. I'm just wildly inconsistent for some bizarre reason.
I wrote 15,000 words of a collaborative worldbuilding thing on a whim for a friend, and also recorded and edited down a 12-minute video in 2 weeks when I was very new to editing.
Neither of them were very good but I dunno how I cranked them out so fast.
every day. Working on stuff now that I had no idea that I could do till I did it. And sometimes I paint stuff that I sit there and go.. wait.. I did this.. neat!
All the time, especially with very old drawings. Sometimes I look at my super old sketches I doodled way back in school and are absolutely stumped by how the heck i was able to draw that so effortlessly. Ngl sometimes i get a bit envious of my younger self 😭
I tried a few times but could never emulate what I made accurately. I think that's why professional animators sometimes write notes when animating so I've heard.
I remember learning how to do 3/4 views in junior high, went back to profiles/front views for a bit and lost all knowledge of how 3/4 views worked. Still trying to unearth those secrets again sometimes.

So I have the process for almost everything + time stamps + troubleshooting notes.
Best thing I ever created.
Until this, I'd never been so creative or prolific on a sustained basis.
Then I look back like a month later and wonder why I liked it
The cycle repeats
Especially in cases where I don’t master the process.
