Once it's pasted I use the selection tool to stretch it out to fill the canvas. Make sure "nearest neighbor" is selected as the scaling option!! I drag it to the top corner and make sure it's locked in to both top and left edges (yellow line indicators). Drag to fit the canvas fully.

The drawing guide is optional... it's not there to lock pixels into place just as a visual grid guide. I often turn it off because I prefer less visual clutter. It still places 1 pixel at a time since that's the size of the canvas/brush.

When I was googling this last week I read someone said they screenshot their artwork to share because of the way Procreate scales pixel art 😱 your approach is way better!!
