Interesting tho that in areas like the Soo, Mennonites are buying up small family farms as they come up and establishing their form of cooperative communities.

They can't afford to. They want to but farming is very capital intensive and really hard to start if you're born into it at this point.

My parents and brothers still runs a dairy farm in Midwestern Ontario, and it's so clear that the only way in for individuals and families is inheritance, nothing else can compete with corporations. And that's even under the protection of supply management.

The trad farm hasn't existed in ages. Where Peavey Mart is closing their locations, development is pushing up land prices just as much other farms trying to expand to remain competitive. Plus Peavey is overpriced, they're for the horse and hobby farms.

Now, the farms are becoming yet another financial vehicle for the rich. Why would we give them control of our food production, what will it mean for food prices? Steve is right the outlook is bleak. I wonder how many are foreign owned, that's probably a number I won't like.

I take heart that I'm seeing (somewhat) of a resurgence of small family farms in my area. Young, university educated farmers who are not only good farmers, but possessed of savy marketing skills and who collaborate with one an other.

I live between the Rockies and the prairies. I see a lot more small family farms in mountainous BC than I do the prairies. I'm sure it has a lot to do with ease of access to huge swaths of land.

I know three local farm, young families, that relocated to my area (Georgian Bay Ontario) from BC, several years ago, because they were able to trade their small BC farms for much bigger properties. That may not be the case now, as proximity to Toronto has been pushing up land values.

My sister and brother-in-law moved out to our family farm to help our parents. They are learning. We will not give it up.
