This shouldn’t be controversial. Our problem is that we view the ruling class as people while they got to where there are by denying our humanity. You cannot be a billionaire without wide-scale violence against masses of people

people accept and expect violence to be meted out incrementally down the food chain, so when they see someone kill upwards it feels more brutal because it goes against the natural order

I do think this is true, but I also think it’s got a lot to do with the proximity of the person causing the harm. Oligarchs and oppressive regimes have systems to hide behind, whereas individuals have only themselves and their direct actions

Of course murder is horrible and makes you feel squeamish if you’re an empathetic person, but what Luigi did is give them back a fraction of what they enact on us. One murder is comprehensible (and therefore can be denounced). The brutality of capitalism is incomprehensible and so we accept it

Yes! Individualism is a terrifying but predictable outcome. If all you see is evidence that the only way to avoid harm is to dominate your neighbours, self-preservation is going to take over for a decent chunk of people

It’s something I’ve been wrestling with since the story first broke, and whilst I simply can’t feel that the murder is a positive or worth celebrating, it feels inevitable, like what would you expect to happen with a system so fundamentally broken.
