As he departed in the early 70s, I suspect he expected a teapot with loose leaf tea, a tea strainer and a porcelain cup and saucer. The tea itself would be an Assam or Darjeeling back tea or similar with a dash of milk (I take lemon). He lived through WW2 so may have given up sugar due to rationing.
