ESRI has a lot of federal customers. I was a federal user for over 20 years. This is coming from a strictly QGIS (and GDAL) user. #GISchat

Or Esri could have country/region specific basemaps? e.g. a basemap is GNIS names for America, a historical/international basemap that with Gulf Of Mexico in line with the rest of the world. Like switching between feet/meters on maps, why not choose between American and International basemaps?

Also in ArcGIS Online, wet your region to “World” instead of “US”. You can set your organization's region by going to Organization > Settings > General > Organization Defaults.

For us the ethics come into play in serving our federal agency customers who rely on our map services in order to fulfill their missions. Do we abandon them? We at least provide workarounds for re-labeling. My suggestion was for us to use 2 labels but that was not successful. But yes #GulfofMexico

Not trying to be a pest here and I know you personally aren't responsible for corporate strategy but who is ESRI's biggest competitor? If ESRI said "lol no" what is BLM, DOD, USDA etc going to start using? They're not all gonna roll their own FOSS

This where we do compete with Google, which dominates the consumer (individual by individual) mapping market, but also in our niche of "enterprise," as used across govt agencies. Also, an EO isn't a law, and there's no legal precedent for a president to unilaterally rename an international body of water. I'd love to see Esri, NGS, Rand McNally, @mapquest.com, and all the other mapmakers stand up against the bully and say "nope!" Then let the feds rename base layers 1 by 1.
