Holy hell, I am so sorry to hear this. I would expect that after two years of living and being married she would be eligable for a citizenship and wouldnt need to pay such amount

The requirements can be supplemented by cash savings but at a much higher rate, about 2.5× the annual shortfall plus several thousand.

We're required to hold it in savings for a few months before it can be used as proof of income. There's info about the process on the uk gov websites pertaining to the spouse visa. After that, I'm hoping I can pay it forward in some way. This has just been a headache for us for months

For years we've had plans to live here in the UK permanently but just this year the departing tory government brutally increased the required income requirement for us to afford my wife a visa. I am a UK citizen, but my wife is not, meaning she's not allowed to work and I must make the requirement.

just a guess based on prior experience of ukvi: this sounds like an initial spouse visa ((despite the spouse already being present in the uk - likely on a different visa type)) where only the british sponsor's income is used for the application. combined wages can be used for renewals/ILR etc only

Gotcha, figured the spouse was already in the country on a spousal visa and this was for the second application after the initial 2.9 years or whatever it is. Your explanation is likely and makes sense

So to clarify, I am a dual citizen. We got married in the US and moved to the UK together this year, fully prepared to make the visa requirements, but in the same month we moved, the requirements shot up. She doesn't currently have a visa so I'm the only one able to work currently.

If it had stayed at what it was, we'd already have her visa in hand and be happily living and contributing to our community. Instead, we have to struggle, our friends and family have to worry about us, and our home life itself is threatened for no reason other than political xenophobia.

I have been working extremely hard to do what I can but it hasn't been enough to afford the visa. As much as I haven't wanted to, I'm afraid we must now publicly ask for help. Our right to live together as a married couple is threatened by the greed of government. Please help if you can.
