Really nice stuff, and great to see the feedback loop between action and conviction being articulated, I do wonder the influence of instances of collective action succeeding or failing on these dynamics as these could either radicalise or soften convictions over time.

Thank you. Yes, perceptions of failure or success are likely to influence psychological engagement, especially in relation to efficacy (we briefly acknowledge this in the paper). But it's complex (and the evidence in the literature is limited and mixed).

Yes that's what intrigued me with efficacy beliefs being included, but actually not having an impact. Perhaps it's like the Olympics motto: "win or lose, the most important is to participate".

E.g., protesters might have perceived the collective action as partially successful but also as a failure if their goals weren’t fully achieved. Unfortunately, we didn't measure perceptions of failure or success (or anything that could be a proxy for it).

We proposed that participating in collective action may moralize people’s attitudes further (i.e., through changes in moral conviction) over time because it politicizes their identity, enrages them toward the outgroup, and/or empowers them to achieve social change. (2/9)

We approached the relationship between participation in collective action and attitude moralization as a dynamic process, as collective action is also likely to be predicted by moral conviction, politicized identification, group-based anger toward the outgroup, and ingroup efficacy beliefs. (3/9)

To test these ideas, we conducted a 2-year, 5-wave longitudinal study (with a time lag of 6 months) in the context of a social movement in Chile. We used RI-CLPMs and focused on within-person changes over time (as attitude moralization is theorized & assumed to be an intraindividual process). (4/9)

We found that participation in collective action predicts individual changes in moral conviction over time, and this was explained by policitized identification, group-based anger toward the outgroup, and not by ingroup efficacy beliefs. (5/9)

This means that participating in collective action may reinforce politicized identities (i.e., “who we are”) and negative emotions (i.e., anger) toward the outgroup, which subsequently strengthen one's moral conviction (i.e., “what we stand for”). (7/9)
