I guess there would be no point in that case - and any local(e) overlay would/could probably use whatever preferred name in the local language anyway, even German-speaking areas used to use names like Neu-York like the Spanish world does today. - ThreadSky

Yeah agreed. Anyway I think this whole story is a nothingburger until the USGS officially makes a change, which I am not sure will ever happen

Somebody should propose it first! I do seem to think Oceania was not so used as a continent name until more recently (when I was a child I think the continent as a whole was Australia, maybe wrong?)

Idk, in German it used to be the "Südsee" or Southern Sea (and its Inseln/islands) in my childhood, I guess we adapted Ozeanien from the English-speaking world at some point but it is usually taken to mean "everybody down there except the continent of Australia"
