I for one, understand.
1st one I encountered was severely disabled. Was a regular caregiver, then went away to service. Came on leave. Walked in and he beamed a smile, then after a moment he shed tear. Joy at reunion, sadness at realizing I’d been away??

There is a non verbal child in my mom’s PreK class. The only verbal sound she makes is singing when she likes a song but other wise she doesn’t speak. My mom started singing with her and she now says Hi to my mom every day.

He might not "speak," but my brother ALWAYS responds when I sing to him, singing along in his own way. It is a most rewarding duet and makes my heart overflow ❤️!

6 weeks ago, I lost my child that smiled those smiles and I miss them and the giggles. The joy found in the small things is the greatest thing in the world. Enjoy each and everyone and use the strength to fight for what they are trying to take away from the beautiful children: their healthcare,

I taught special ed - 38 years- in a special school. I loved working with non and low verbal students teaching them signs and gestures, or using a symbol based device. When they can communicate and get results, they feel powerful. It builds on itself and is so exciting!
