Reading code means you no longer need to speculate on how something works. You can just know. So many what whataboutisms fall away when you can reference actual code.

It's also amazing the number of times I've had versions of this conversation after a dependency blows up in production:
me: you need to know what your deps actually do from now on.
engineer: unreasonable, no.
me: okay, then you don't get to decide which deps we add any more.
engineer: also no.

I know there's some obvious limitations to this. Like, reading Postgres code is not easy, but there's a lot of low hanging fruit in a modern web app.
