From the time I first watched it until someone on the Internet began the claim that it was a Christmas movie, I never thought it was. In that way, it's not.

It's a new phenomenon that's sorta counter-cultury. Removing Christmas from the movie would affect it pretty minimally.
But to people being very vocal about convincing everyone that it is, maybe just let us think that it isn't one.
It's why John Mcclane traveled to Los Angeles, and it's why Nakatomi Plaza was mostly vacant, save for the party, allowing for the heist to happen.
It could be roughly the same movie plot-wise during Thanksgiving at some other location.
