i don't know... it's not so much about A rational argument for or against X, it's just incorporating that huge insight in one's worldview by the mere fact that you now know it and understand it
Just because people read it doesn't mean they understand, sadly. Like I said, I am much more pessimistic about that. People might as well read it and not buy into it, just as millions of people reading fascist works would likely not result in them becoming fascists either.
Yeah. I mean, the premise "If more people had a humane view and understanding of the world it would be a better place" is shared by us. But sadly I have lost most faith in the idea that literature, especially philosophy, could help achieve that. It can help in those open to it. The rest? Hmm. 🙁🙁
i'd still maintain that wider (and earlier) exposure *helps* in the aggregate and at the margin. but brains do rot in an exorbitantly fast way and apparently regardless of previous exposures, as we are now literally observing lol
