RE: magic, I wouldn’t say it is magic as such it’s the “stuff” of the fantastical the difference between a giant lizard beast with wings that breaths fire and a dragon. There is that palpable something other then rational that even explained is still beyond.
the distinction between various modes of conception of the self and psychology thru history, is the focal idea. Anyway the guy lays out some ideas smartly but his assertion that 'fantasy' must necessarily include 'magic' is baffling to me
what about 'gormenghast'? i don't think that's got 'magic' in it. i mean past a certain point these are just arbitrary marketing terms. BUT there is some broad relationship to 'mythic' ideas that meaningfully unifies a lot of what we call fantasy fiction i think
