I don’t view Pete in harsh terms like con man but we don’t need to agree on that if we’re in the same ball park on the way forward. The astroturf “draft Pete” will be resisted, regardless of tone. I tend to see people as (usually) well-intentioned even as they cry out for a savior.
Fox NewsTobin Smith wrote a book Foxocracy where apparently he describes their tactics (I read an article summary). As an entertainment broadcast, they designed viewers “conquest,” to raise the dopamine. This to me is the reason they whataboutism and there’s no flexibility in thinking. They must win
Trump voters would rather die than admit they were wrong. The real answer is most Americans are progressive, policy by policy. They don't want a political label but they are. If someone fights to activate the base, particularly the left with working class policies, they'll bring out lots of casuals.
Frankly think the next great leader will be lesser known with fire in their belly, maybe emerging from a viral moment, not from astroturfing. So many can see the latter from a mile away; people are still too polite to shout STFU about it, though.
Will be somebody the established pols have no chance to squelch or suppress. AOC got shivved by Nancy, unfortunately. Will come from outside conventional political circles, perhaps. Somebody nobody saw coming and is underestimated. (Like Trump was, for the fascists/dominionists/broligarchs)

Which means he's misread Pete.
I understand his comment fine.
He just thinks Pete won't be listened to by rightwingers.
We already know Bernie was & is
He's now began a campaign tour to unite working class people against the fascist right
