I’m reading “Forbidden” by Beverly Jenkins right now which is a slow burn. Almost all of her books are either about external conflict or the men have to become worthy for the women before they can be in a committed relationship

I’ve only listened to 3 of her books so far, but Alexandria House doesn’t seem to have many third act breakups. The couples stay together, but there might be some personal drama in their individual lives that gets sorted out

Romance must end with a "happily ever after" or "happy for now" ending. A book can be romantic, but it isn't accept by the romance genre without the HEA.

I think that's becoming less popular. Readers seem to enjoy it when the couple must unite to overcome a problem together. Romancing the beat calls it the "dark night of the soul" Are you getting into romance writing? 🤩

In The Kiss Countdown the love interest is an astronaut and the couple had to overcome separation when he was on a space mission in the third act. It wasn't a break up, but the relationship was still challenged. So it can be done!

The third act breakup is not required and is highly controversial. A romance should (a) centralise a love story and (b) have a happy ending. That's it. (And that's why Nicholas Sparks is not a romance writer.)
