Herzl was THE founding father of A Zionism. The phrasing in the article is leading; he sought land for a state in Uganda, S. America, not just Palestine, from the powers who controlled them.
Herzl's Zionism was simply the creation of a state where Jews would have the protections denied in Europe.
You are right about “colonization” being a stated goal; while he used the word, his actions do not align with our current application of the word. The aggressive takeover of land occurred well after Herzl was dead. Ben Gurion is the one who wrote they were taking the land for themselves by force.
Zionism is ethnic nationalism that marginalizes non-Jews. Nationalism promotes the superiority of one group over others. Zionism is Nazism adjacent… both represent ethnic nationalism, tying national identity to race or ethnicity.
