As far Eric Saward’s fan reply goes, it’s worth pointing out that he didn’t twice use the word “novelists” but “novalists” – what Priest described to me as being Saward’s “radical approach to spelling”!

Priest told me in 1990: “If the phone call from Nathan-Turner in 1981 was (and remains) the single most unpleasant conversation in my life, then his grovelling letter of apology is probably the one that caused the loudest cries of joy and triumph.”
