I used this in class, thank you for putting it together!
I can still imagine one could do class debates using this material, having the students find out about the progress on each topic in the past 2 decades.
I remember that effort. I think I talked about Monsters Inc in one segment. A commendable effort to this day that led me to create a first year student class on CV in the movies. Good stuff.
Couldn’t you put it up on YouTube now and argue for educational use?
Great memory, Jason! I’ll check the YouTube policies again. Last time I tried (about 10 years ago) I couldn’t find a way to do it without applying distortions/corruptions to the clips.
We named it “Computer Vision: Fact & Fiction,” and structured it around the reactions of researchers to clips from science fiction movies and TV shows. (2/5)
YouTube launched around the time we finished it, and we thought it would be cool to upload it there, but we — unsurprisingly, in retrospect — ran into copyright issues. We decided to distribute it as a DVD by mail, which greatly reduced its reach. (3/5)
It’s a delightful time capsule of the state of the field circa 2005, with lots of familiar faces. @kristinmbranson.bsky.social recently reminded me about this project and I managed to find the video files in my backups. (4/5)
