We have red winged black birds here in Illinois, and they are very unpleasant when you get in their territory lol. Is this a variation of a red wing blackbird?

No, they do have yellow feathers that are visible when they outstretch their wings.

Itβs funny how itβs the same bird but here itβs just a solid red band, no yellow. Then I look online and some have only yellow

Beautiful image of a red-winged blackbird. I had many of them in Florida but none here. β€οΈ

Lovely! I can never seem to catch them showing off their red and yellow patches.

My favorite bird of all time.
I was raised in an area that was a frozen wasteland hellscape for 9 months of the year.
The first bird to start singing in the early spring when the ground was still buried under many feet of snow was the red-winged blackbird.
To me, itβs the sound of hope.
