I do not interview people all the often. But I’ve found that generally, someone will tell you everything you need to know about them if you let them talk long enough. Patience is not a naturally occurring virtue for me, so actually doing this involves a Herculean effort at times.

My uncle had a long, successful legal career, and I remember him telling me that when he questioned someone in court, “I’ve found that if I give them enough rope, eventually they’ll hang themselves.” This seems to be true even when people aren’t under oath.
