problem with making any hyperbolic statement abt video games as a medium is that I assume for every game that scrapes by into the western canon there's like 50 untranslated taiwan-only DOS RPGs that have been running since 1989 that are probably just as good as Chrono Trigger that I'll never play

I think north americans are the worst when it comes to this, I noticed they refer to absolutely anything as obscure as long as it foreign, when they find out there is some videogame based on a German TV show or whatever they freak out, like they found something that can't possibly exist.

This is one good reason why I can't enjoy lists discussing the most influential games of all time anymore, when I know the people making said lists probably did not get to experience those obscure games that did not get adapted in the west but were influential to many of the popular ones

I for one am not an expert in gaming and have not played many games besides what's renowned here on the west, but I understand that many games never leave Japan, China and other countries but they were influential to the creators of many important games that were themselves successfully ported here

So when I get to a video or article discussing the "most influential" games and they talk about the obvious Marios, Zeldas and etc, I just can't engage with those articles anymore knowing they are probably missing a lot of other games

Honestly, being from the 3rd world helps a lot with this.

I always knew there are things extremely important & influential to 200 million Brazilians but that no one outside the country heard about. That no "Western canon" mentions.

Makes it much easier to care when other cultures go "yeah, same".

There have been two episodes for now and the second one is definitely better. They do interesting thing with time jumps and you can feel that HBO production value. It's worth a look.

I gave up halfway through listening to the 1001 Albums book when I just got overwhelmed by how much 90s Britpop was on there when non-Anglosphere music was largely represented by the same two Mali blues artists the author clearly had a soft spot for.
