oh yeah, that's absolutely true. But I think emphasizing the first when the second is in crisis, or using it as a qualifier, caveat, etc., muddles up the message.

I don't know, I get why people feel the need. In our black-and-white world where people don't get point #2, people will take someone standing up for someone else's rights as agreement with everything they stand for and some people want to make sure they aren't seen in that light?

Exactly. And I got responses exactly like this from other folks, and I had to clarify many times how I was talking about due process and not at all his beliefs, and such

We saw the same thing during the George Floyd protests when the right was trying to make it about Floyd's character and criminal history and we had to keep explaining over and over and over that even if George Floyd was a flawed person that didn't warrant an extrajudicial killing by a cop!

it does, sure, but it's the very, very last line that is what I need people to understand, and, judging by my FB community, very barely there
