Inspired by @chittimarco.bsky.social I've done a brief look into Japanese level-crossings which are a big and difficult problem for Japanese railways. They've halved the number of them and upgraded almost all the remainder, but still way to go.

Tokyo also prioritised capacity until 2009, only then did getting rid LC's climb up priority ladder.
train accidents occur there and...suicides. Subtracting suicides Japan has okay transit safety but not as good as the UK.
