I think about the fact that the VE Day Riots were so much part of people’s pent up frustration about how absurdly inadequate the transit was to accommodate the huge influx in population because I feel the same ire bubbling now.

We paved over the tracks and replaced them with trolley busses (an admirable decision at the time) as maintenance costs were unsustainable, and the population was basically cut in half

But the automobile lobby convinced the entire NA continent that every person needed their own car, that internal combustion engines were the future, and that it couldn't possibly be inefficient, environmentally catastrophic, and ludicrously expensive...

And now we've let those same people convince us that battery electric vehicles will be the "green revolution" we need to save the planet. Conveniently ignoring the fact that it doesn't address the fundamental problem that car-centric urban planning has decimated our urban centres

I grew up in a disconnected suburb, with nowhere to go and nothing to do. Before I moved out, my family had 4 cars, one for each family member... b/c you needed one if you had to go anywhere!

It wasn't until I went to university at Acadia and experienced real walkability for the first time that something clicked in my head. And it wasn't even until that was yanked away from me when I moved to Kentville, and I no longer had that dense, walkable community; did I realize what I had lost

I became radicalized by the information I discovered online; people like NotJustBikes, CityNerd, RM Transit, and Oh The Urbanity!

They showed me that it was possible to live a life that wasn't dominated by the automobile. There were places designed for people, bikes, and public transit
