But if they’re recommending both there’s a reason. My swatches completely changed which size needles I used to get gauge. If I hadn’t done it my size would be so off. And there’s a lot of 💰 invested in a sweater quantity of yarn.

The pattern actually didn’t recommend how to swatch. Just gave a standard gauge measurement and didn’t specify whether or not to do one or the other or both. \_(ツ)_/¯
Oh, my misunderstanding. I’m on my second pattern that has recommended both. It was actually helpful. I needed to size down 1 size for gauge for the flat part and up 1 (2sizes up from the flat portion) in the round. Most of us knit a lot looser flat because of the purl rows.
I’ve concluded I’d rather buy 1 extra skein of yarn than put 10 or more into a piece I never wear. The latter is much less affordable. And frogging it to reknit would be so much harder than a swatch. This is from a reformed swatch hater. Learned the hard way.
