Another thought: Ancestors might actually be pleased that descendants cared enough to carefully read family letters that were saved for many decades. If something seems too "secret" then don't share but otherwise, my approach would be to see what insights can be gained into #FamilyHistory #Genealogy

My grandma went through ALL of her mom/uncle/aunt's letters and discovered all sorts of stuff, including that her mother left her father when she was pregnant with her in 1939! And how her aunt wanted to raise her as her own. I'd have been scared to read it first though

I requested the prison record for a forgotten family member of mine. In it included a love letter to another prisoner that he got in huge trouble for.

I was so stunned and felt like I was violating, so I skipped it. 6 months later I was able to come back to it, and so glad I did. Beautiful letter

I have all the letters my grandparents exchanged when they were courting during WWII - him writing from his ship to his girl back home.

I haven't read them yet, but I know I'm allowed because while she never let me read them my grandmother always said "when I'm gone, they're yours".

She knew I would care for them and use my best discretion I expect, but know what you mean about it being personal to someone else. I know I will read the ones I have one day - I have a huge box and some will need digitizing etc but I'm not quite ready yet.
