It was an incredibly solid game and I loved it as well. In terms of being a devil may cry, yeah it's obviously bad BUT it has very fun gameplay and the story was interesting in a lot of places. I sunk a hefty amount of time in that one honestly way more than I've put in the actual series. Loved it!
like yeah it has no shortage of cringe, but I like that it actually had its own identity instead of just "pretending" to be a reboot like a lot of other franchises do
My take on it is, enjoyable game, bad if you were a hardcore DMC fan. The guy that made it went into it disliking the franchise and it made a lot of choices come off as an insult to fans. Strip those away and you have an enjoyable game, which inspired some of the mechanics of 5.
I remember people crying and whining about the protagonist's "short hair" in comparison to the original, as if that's any kind of metric that matters to enjoy a game
I found the cringe-worthy aspects charming, like watching a bad movie that you can’t help but return to. However, the worst thing about the game, in my opinion, was Vergil.

It also has some of the worst writing / dialogue I've ever witnessed in a triple A game, it's aged a lot worse than the other DMC games.
gameplay was a blast too
Vergil, more like… Ver…shill 🔥🔥
