278 million urban Americans vs 55 million rural. The percentage is very low, but it isn't inherently about lack of availability.

I live in a suburb of Oklahoma City, ~30 km from downtown. If I wanted to get to a job by 9 AM via public transport, I start with a 25 minute walk to get a bus that arrives at 7:45 AM. If I miss that bus, the next one comes along in 2 hours. And downtown is the easiest place to get to on the bus.

We have the same problem where I live. I’d love to take a bus into town, or anywhere out here, but it’s not an option.

That is astonishingly low. I think Covid may be largely to blame for the drop between 2019 and 2022. How can proponents overcome the dual barriers of limited access and public health/safety concerns? A spate of headline-grabbing assaults on city subways hasn't helped public perception.

When public transit isn’t well-connected, frequent, or even in existence in a lot of places in the US, it’s really hard to get high ridership.
