I lived in Boston for 7 years (2008-2015) and I also had this experience. Thought it was downright odd that my shitty hometown in southwestern Pennsylvania had better food purchasing options than one of the premier American cities.

Lived in Los Angeles for 13+ years and not once did a grocery store have every single thing I wanted or needed in stock. It just became a way of life to go to two stores if you wanted bread AND eggs AND that one cereal.
I had Market Basket and Wegman’s nearby when I lived in Somerville and both were better than any non-Market District Giant Eagle ever was. That said, neither Shaws/Star nor Stop n Shop did it for me. So now I live in Providence: no Wegmans, Market Basket exists but annoyingly far 😭
i have come to the realization as an adult that the Giant Eagle in Uniontown is just unusually good. i think a lot of the produce and meat comes from very nearby which probably explains it, i just didn't realize how good i had it at as a kid until i moved to Mass for college
Apparently the stores get some amount of leeway in what they stock. The South Side Giant Eagle despite having gotten kinda run down by ~2010 had a lot of decent produce cuz the guy who ran the department got what he could from local farms.
