The full study is here. If I'm reading right: 98% did *not* experience a physical antisemitic attack, 94% were *not* vandalized or left antisemitic flyers, and somehow 77% were *not* the recipient of an in person antisemitic remark. https://www.ajc.org/AntisemitismReport2024/AmericanJews

Some of these are poorly-defined. Does "have you experienced it online" mean a DM of "you are a [slur]"? Antisemitic content or stereotypes you see but don't engage with (eg. Kanye West, Twitter Nazis, etc)? Dogwhistles? Stereotypes? Etc.

To be very clear: I think 23% of Jews hearing at least one antisemitic remark in person response is too high. The ideal percentage of Jews experiencing any kind of antisemitism is, in my view, zero.

But I worry that there are some seizing on the fear of American Jews for political reasons while obscuring the reality that most of us are not experiencing antisemitism personally and far fewer, thank goodness, are on the receiving end of it physically. One last thing:

I’m guessing (educated guess) in 1932, most Jews in Germany hadn’t- yet - personally experienced anti Semitism. When one gets to 51% of Jews personally experiencing anti Semitism - history teaches us that it’s too late. I encourage you to think more deeply about your conclusions, & about canaries.

Well we have trans people and people with disabilities and immigrants and Black and brown people experiencing bigotry and threats all day every day right now so it’s already time to act as if it were 100% of Jews personally experiencing antisemitism.

One exception, though. I have a leftist Israeli friend (who opposes Bibi) who had to transfer out of Columbia because of harassment over the Gaza invasion. Office trashed, threats, etc.

That's the number from just the Jewish respondents, and, frankly, I wonder about the 5%. But to your point, here are the numbers comparing Jews to the general public, and it's still encouraging news.

Two other thoughts: 1 https://bsky.app/profile/emilyctamkin.bsky.social/post/3lhynkb6tu22p 2 As a follow on from that, not experiencing antisemitism personally doesn't mean it's not a threat, particularly if its expressed at, say, the highest political levels by the country's most powerful people.
