My lovely husband is 6ft 5ins tall. We were in Shanghai on the Bund wandering along & tiny Chinese men kept pointing at him & saying Godzilla. They also asked if they could do a selfies with him. Rude, but also quite innocent somehow.

My six year old loves Godzilla but has yet to see a movie, the new ones look too intense and the old ones aren’t in English and I can’t find dubs. Maybe he’ll tolerate subs but he’s not that strong reader yet. I’ve only seen a few. Anyway where do you think I should start him?

5 or 6 was about how old I was when I watched the original King Kong vs. Godzilla and it definitely kicked off the lifelong fascination. I think that one is actually harder to find subbed than dubbed so it should be out there!

The Minecraft movie looks so soulless. Adults in the entertainment industry seem to have forgotten what it was like to be a child. Kids don't like to be babied or given content that talks down to them as if they aren't smart enough to understand complex characterizations and plots.

In general bad meta storytelling feels like creators don't trust the audience to process anything but "cool" stories & think stories with unrealistic, naturally funny or absurd elements will be rejected or not understood unless the presentation pre-emptively acknowledges & criticizes it first.

Yeah, I liked the lego movie 2 talking about toxic masculinity but that's a message for slightly older kids than the movie was aiming for. Or redeemable villains etc not everyone is redeemable. Give them a judge Doom like we had in Roger Rabbit, a true evil character.

It's all done to make money. Period. Very little is done in films that has any other goal.

FWIW, I thought godzilla and King Kong - the originals - were fakey and ridiculous. "Let's smash everything" plots seem to be more popular with little boys than girls. Good moral to the stories, though.

The Lego Movie, while it did essentially have "this world is not the REAL real world" also managed to be sincere. More like, the Lego existence was real, just part of a larger reality. But not one that invalidated theirs.

The "real world" storyline served to enhance the "LEGO world" storyline, rather than downplay it. It also helps that we get introduced to the LEGO world, or the imagination of a literal child, first rather than a boring "real humans with 0 knowledge about anything get transported to a fantasy world"

As a kid I loved SuperTed. A cartoon about a teddy bear who can become SuperTed, a teddy bear with super powers. He was a discarded toy, but he was in the real world and he fought against: Texas Pete (an evil cowboy), Skeleton (a camp skeleton), and Bulk (a big strong guy).

I remember Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons as a little kid (Rocky originally had top billling) and Mr Peabody, and y'know, I think kids learn irony and sarcasm from having it presented in an accessible way. Fractured Fairy Tales, too. But it takes considerable skill to write to both kids AND adults.
