Also worth noting that even the $ that’s left may have shoddy accounting. If you “save” money by cutting foreign aid but then have to spend more later on defense, or if you “save” money on public health and then pay for pandemics that’s an additional cost.

Even more directly- if you "save" a million dollars by firing ten people illegally you lose the tax revenue those people would have contributed and then multiplier effect of their spending
