It's amazing. I think the first 5 or 10 years of the BBC as a whole is a bit like this - John Reith having a plan and then being absolutely perplexed if everyone doesn't immediately think it's the best idea in the world.

Oh yes! Even the childrens' pages of the old RT are packed with dense paragraphs of information (this edition has piece about volcanoes). The only difference from the rest of the magazine is they're written by an "auntie".
