Astounding news from Syria overnight. But what a price the world - and not just the region - has paid for Assad’s determination to cling on: a refugee crisis that jolted European politics and still does, Obama faltering over red lines etc etc

Dominoes, Putin’s influence is failing. His fixation with Ukraine has cost him dearly, Georgia will hoof out his proxy, Romania has sorted their election. Orban…. I reckon will be out within 6 months. It’s taken a long time, but Putin is coming to the end too.
Miliband’s abysmal legacy has had huge repercussions. From Syria, to changing Labour’s leadership election which allowed Corbyn in, which in turn contributed to Brexit due to Corbyns antipathy to the EU.
Syrian refugees across the world, I can only imagine the joy that's going on right now.
I wonder how many of them will be planning to return home to help the rebuild. Governments should be actively pursuing this avenue and assisting anyway we can.
I can imagine around 90%. A sense of patriotism to be part of the rebuild of their homes etc. With the other 10% happy with their current living situation now.
I did a quick lazy Google search. 5 million Syrians displaced around the world. We should be helping them as much as possible.
Were you in their situation wouldn’t you want to go home? Do your bit to rebuild? I would. The idea they’re “on benefits” or whatever (as if that’s worth being bombed out of your home) is just nonsense from the media 🤪🔥
I still use it occasionally for spaceflight news (+ I like that Melon has to pay for server space to host my dead account 🤣), but I always feel dirty when I use it.
I have little compunction to post though, why would I invite Blue Ticks to insult me? 🤪🔥
The world will shortly begin to learn more and more on the atrocities carried out by Assad’s regime. Atrocities that were enabled by laissez faire western policies. Historians will, in the future, judge politics/politicians/media for this and govts like Saudi and Israel.
Obama, needed the UK to support US action against Syria’s use of Chemical weapons. Miliband and his ludicrous opposition to the action, was so expensive in terms of lives lost….. it enabled Putin to fill the vacuum left.
Obama did not falter. It was one of the bravest decisions any modern president has taken. Would’ve been a series of pathetic air raids that achieved nothing & only triggered an even more brutal reaction from Assad on his opponents who would’ve blamed Obama for not seeing regime change thru.
Overall, we were probably wise to stay out of Syria. It could so easily have turned into another Afghanistan or Iraq. The warring neighbours and internal factions would never have allowed democracy to return. Lesson learned for the west, not propping up dictators.
And the aftermath will pose just as many far-reaching questions and challenges. Let’s sincerely hope for a better outcome than Libya or Afghanistan. The Syrian people deserve it.
Quite, the Syrian people at least have a chance now. The situation is complex to say the least, but some of the groups which make up the rebellion are somewhat less murderous than others…
Some sort of fracturing is inevitable I think, the coalition that makes up the rebellion is heterogeneous, but some of the groups are somewhat reasonable & less murderous. Plus Turkey & Israel will be able to assert influence (Iran less so. Thankfully)
There is fear in Syria right now too. There are jihadists amongst the rebels who would see Syria run under Sharia law, not unlike Afghanistan. This could turn nasty very quickly.

I mean, we would want that support too, right?
Yes the world must now do its part to bring stability to the region.

You can tell musks rattled, I've just looked on X.
Nothing coming up about the joys of Syria being free. It's all hatred about how Christians are going to die there and nothing much else.
Honestly, when you look at xitter from the outside, it's truly a fucking rancid place.

Broadly I think the lesson here is that the West must act decisively (even if clumsily)
