It must start at primary level. Critical thinking isn’t abstract; it’s the ability to assess information, recognise manipulation, and engage thoughtfully. Many countries already integrate aspects of this into their school systems - we don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just learn from the best.

And yet many (most?) schools have eliminated the Science Fair, which at a minimum teaches that statements must be supported with data/ evidence, and to suss out confounding variables. Shorter: to teach critical thinking (as Eliot says).

Would love to see in at least grades 4-8.

It doesn’t matter when it starts. But it must start from home. It doesn’t matter how smart kids are, if their families value hatred and family loyalty and vilify intellectuals, kids will never even try. Schools teach critical thinking, but kids who don’t value it will always take the easy route.

Hi Eliot, What's more age appropriate is to start this after puberty. If you start teaching all the adult race discrimination and class warfare ideas prior to puberty, it robs kids of their childhood. Also few K-5 teaches up to this intellectually

In Finland, media education has been part of schools since the 1950s and is woven into the curriculum. Students learn about propaganda, misleading statistics, and even create their own media messages to understand how narratives shape perception.

A key driver of disordered discourse isn’t just misinformation - it’s a lack of trust in democratic institutions. When people feel powerless, when they believe institutions don’t serve them, don’t listen to them, and don’t respond to truth, they disengage. That detachment fuels disordered discourse.
