I’m well aware of criticisms of AMLO. But to say he was able to do all this in a single six year term, and to suggest that it’s all one big theft, I’m skeptical. Clearly him and his party have a certain appeal. Sham referenda in what sense? How did he manufacture this mandate?

The Mexican government is currently (at least on paper) pretty left wing, and I'm not sure how having justices stand for election is a power grab. (Whether it's a good idea or not is another question.)

So it should go without saying that left wing isn't mutually exclusive with authoritarianism. I also am not sure whether this move makes the system more or less authoritarian.

The Morena party isn’t nearly as progressive as they claim to be. AMLO did his best to centralize and militarize government under the office of the president while undermining the electoral process and free press, and his successor gets to inherit the fruits of his labor

I confess that I've paid less attention to this than I wish, and am confused about how this is authoritarianism. Is the fear that the elections will be rigged? Or that people will vote for justices that support the kind of changes/status quo that they want? Or something else?

when civil servants like judges, prosecutors, or sheriffs have to get elected, they engage in political theater to look tough on crime for voters. In Mexico specifically, elections are all about demonstrating loyalty to corrupt parties and organized crime in hopes of not being assassinated

that's fair! but it seems the alternative (as in the US Supreme Court) is that in a supposed democracy we are subject to the whims of unelected officials when it comes to vitally important issues, also authoritarian

Most democratic nations don’t elect their judges but also don’t select them through an overtly political appointment process and then give them life tenure on top of that.
